Hunger can cause severe health problems in older people, increasing the likelihood of diseases such as stroke, exacerbating existing health conditions such as diabetes, making medications less effective, and altering brain chemistry, causing high rates of isolation and depression. Malnutrition accounts for a disproportionate percentage of senior health care costs

Baskets Of Hope

The holidays are a difficult time for low-income families. Help provide a holiday meal for a family by giving $25 to Baskets of Hope. With your help, we can achieve our goal of assisting 30,000 Twin Cities residents. Learn how you can give the holiday spirit through Baskets of Hope, and contact us.

The Emergency Foodshelf Network (EFN) provides free holiday meal baskets during November and December to families facing hunger. This is the third year for EFN's new program. Last year we partnered with Fox 9, who helped produce three phone banks to collect public donations throughout the holiday seasons. Awareness was also created with the help of FM107’s Ian and Margery morning show. We had a large group of the radio station’s listeners visit our warehouse and help pack the Baskets of Hope.

Watch the videos, and meet some of the recepients who received a Baskets of Hope 2006: Pinky, Mana, Sue, Lisa, Yvonn and Paula.

Each basket feeds a family of up to eight people. Last year, about 26,000 Twin Cities residents benefited from EFN’s Baskets of Hope, and the demand leaves much room to grow. EFN estimates that we could have easily served another 12,000 individuals if the financial support was available. We look forward to expanding this program this holiday season with your help.

A November Basket of Hope includes a turkey, 5 lbs. potatoes, two cans of fruit, two cans of vegetables, frozen dinner rolls, a frozen fruit pie, stuffing mix, gravy, a family pack of chicken and cranberries. In December, a ham or pork substitute is offered instead of the turkey. Families in need were still calling, requesting baskets days after distribution at EFN’s warehouse. (This year's participant registration begins Nov. 1.)

Please help raise the funds to obtain our goal of serving 30,000 individuals these holiday seasons. Learn how you can make a difference to a family in need, send us an e-mail. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
